I don't think there's any reason to be afraid, but I think it is critically important to be very careful exactly what you put online. My general rule of thumb is that if I'm not prepared to deal with the ramifications of what I do online becoming public, then I just don't do it. I slip up sometimes, but not often. If I need to send something in private, then I use Cryptocat (https://crypto.cat/) which was recommended to me by Thomas Hedderwick.
