Settings, Menu Contents, Categories to exclude NOT WORKING
« on: March 14, 2009, 06:54:32 AM »
When I type the name of the category I want to include from the menu such as archives, it still appears.

I only want to display some of my categories menu item, what needs to be put into the exclude categories box for a category to be excluded? I guess it is not simply the name of the category because that does not work?

Also, how can I enter several categories to exclude in this box on the menu contents page?

Hope my questions makes sense  :)
Thanks

Hi,
You need to enter the category ID, not the name.

Is there an easy way to find the ID's for categories. Any help would be appreciated as I know this goes beyond the extent of your support  :)

The easist way that I know is to select Categories on the Post Menu. Point at the name of one of your categories and and look at the link which in IE displays in the lower left corner. The last part of the link will be the ID number such as ID=xx.

A polite person would have worded that as:
It may be a good idea to add instructions saying to use the category ID on the plugin page.

Oh, and does say the following anyway, so I'm not sure how more explicit I could be:
Quote
IDs to include or exclude

In future there will be a list of categories you can click on to exclude or include, but I haven't quite gotten to that yet.

Boy, I really commend you on your response to such a rude comment. I'm gonna have to work on that for myself, rather than yelling back at someone. Great Job! :) No need to display this if you don't want. I just want you to know.

I find sarcasm is more effective than being rude back :)

I read comments like the ones from Bob and I it really surprises how ungrateful people can be.  Here you have a group of people making something available for FREE and they have to take this kind of crap, unbelievable.

I hope the devs know that there are some of us out there that truly appreciate their work.  The amount of time you have saved me and many others is greatly appreciated, please ignore the haters.

How would one go about showing only a group of pages *and* any subsequent children that they eventually have?  If I specify the 5 category IDs of the parents I want to display, any subsequent children of theirs are not displayed.  Thanks for an awesome job with this plugin BTW   :)

I haven't found a simple plugin-worthy solution for that yet. I can write something custom as part of our Premium Support service, but it wouldn't be suitable for rolling into the core plugin unfortunately. The built in wp_list_pages() function in WordPress unfortunately does not allow for this type of functionality.

Thanks for the prompt response.  Unfortunately, this is a web page for a non-profit organization (Special Olympics of Costa Rica) and I don't think they have the resources handy for the premium support

I think I have an idea to get around it using posts instead of pages.  Again, thanks a lot for this, I'll donate something to the cause later on, well deserved  :)

Under the "Categories," I select the following:
1) Dropdown = Infinite
2) select "Single dropdown?"
3) Added a Category Name
4) Include a couple of category ID # and separating each numeral with a comma
5) Order: Ascending ID#
When I go to my webpage, the Category Name appeared but the dropdown menu indicate "no categories." Why is that? Can anyone help?
