Liverpool hut

Chris Laing at the highest point of our trip up to Liverpool hut.

Avalanche

Chris Laing and I saw a huge avalanche come crashing down off the side of Mount Joffre, or at least I think that’s which mountain it was. I don’t know the area well enough to confirm which exact mountain it was, but it somewhere very near at least. We were in Pearl flat a little further down the valley at the time. Glad we weren’t directly below it that’s for sure!

The photo was taken just after it occurred as I wasn’t able to get my camera out in time before the bulk of it had plummeted to the valley floor.

Matukituki river

Some photos of the Matukituki river in Aspiring National Park. Taken on New Years eve 2010 while on a tramping trip with Chris Laing.

Big ass insect!

Chris Laing spotted this giant flying insect whilst we were walking along the Matukituki track in Mount Aspiring National Park. It was around 10 – 12 cm long. I assume it’s a Dragonfly but am not sure – if you can confirm or provide more information about it, please leave a comment below!

Matukituki valley

Some views of the Matukituki valley taken during a tramping trip with Chris Laing on New Years eve 2010.

Shovel flat in West Matukituki valley. Mount Aspiring is hidden in clouds above and Pearl flat is behind the small mound of trees.

Original version of panorama here.

Matukituki beach

An awesome little beach beside the Matukituki river that Chris Laing and I had lunch at on New Years Eve in Mount Aspiring National park.

Pearl flat

Chris Laing and I camped at Pearl flat which sits below Mount Aspiring. Since no one else was stupid enough to go camping with the sand flies, we had the whole area to ourselves :) The sand flies weren’t a major nuisance and seemed to avoid stinging us so long as we smothered ourselves in regular dollops of deet.
