Green ice?

Apparently the correct term for ice which looks like glass, is “green ice”.

Whilst skating over some incredibly smooth “green ice”, Dave Young decided to poke a hole in it to see how good the visibility was. It then dawned on me that he could attach my ATC2k camera to the end of the pole and record upwards through the ice, so I pulled it out, handed it over, and the video below was the result!

Louis Pasteur: The Space of Life

A photo of mine from the Heidelburg Castle has been used in the documentary “Louis Pasteur: The Space of life“. The image used is from the chemistry laboratory at the castle and was used as the background for the laboratory of Jean Baptiste Biot, the man who discovered the chiral nature of tartaric acid.

As you can see below, they’ve zoomed in, then shrunk it, flipped it horizontally and used it as a background for scenes showing Louis Pasteur and Jean Baptiste Biot. It seems ironic to me that they used a mirror image for the background of a documentary about chirality :p

NMR Quench

Our 500 MHz NMR machine quenched itself today Here is an awful quality photo I took of the aftermath.

To make things worse, our other machine (300 MHz one) has been out of action since late last year, so we now have no NMR access whatsoever … for any non-chemists out there, this is bad, VERY bad!

MRI Quenching

I did some YouTubing and found this video of an MRI machine quenching itself (MRI and NMR are very similar instruments).

Liquid Helium

The NMR machine was full of liquid helium. The quenching involved the liquid helium evaporating very rapidly. Here’s a video about the properties of liquid helium and a video of a liquid helium fountain.

GimpCam and NetCam

I’ve gotten a lot of questions about GimpCam and NetCam recently. To save me feeling like a broken record, here’s a selection of pre-prepared answers …

Yes I did look like a gimp while wearing it
No I’m not going to lend it to you to wear to school
No it doesn’t have X-ray vision
No I don’t use it to spy on girls in the changing room
No I’m not going to lend it to you for that purpose!
No I’m not going to buy a pinhole camera instead (too expensive)
Yes GimpCam and NetCam have the same internals
It cost $80 from a dodgy computer store in SE Calgary
Yes NetCam is housed inside a tupperware container and no I’m not going to integrate it inside the goal post instead
Yes GimpCam looks stupid and no it can’t fit inside the lip at the top of my helmet
Yes I am considering allowing goalies to wear GimpCam but I need to find an appropriate way to protect it as its unlikely to survive a puck impact in it’s current form
No I’m not planning to stream it direct to a projector screen in the warm room
Last of all, NO! You are not allowed to fire slapshots at my head while I’m wearing GimpCam!

I’m now famous! My rather crappy videos have made their way onto the What Now TV show. I received an email from them the other day asking if they could screen some of my videos of the recent New Zealand Ice Hockey National Championships on their show. Pity I didn’t know before hand as I’d have prepared some far better quality footage for them.

Thanks to Jenn Yamagishi for making this video for me It’s of me and two of my inline hockey team mates Christian van Eaden and Steve Pelzer playing ice hockey at Arcadia Arena and in SE Calgary.

The week before, my team mate Janay Magowan and I caught the train down south and walked to the arena. Erm, it turned out to be somewhat further away than we thought So luckilly Steve offered me a lift the week after
